General soreness can be expected at certain times during orthodontic treatment. Eating a softer diet, cutting food up in smaller pieces and avoiding biting with the front teeth will help you get through these periods. Rounded finger nail files are also useful to smooth sharp ends, until you can come into the office for a repair.
